Mainski Put, Budva

Serbian Orthodox Monastery above Budva

Podmaine Monastery occupies a hillside location situated above Mainski Put, a residential area on the outskirts of Budva. The site is accessible via an uphill walking route requiring approximately fifteen minutes of continuous uphill travel from the centre of Budva. The monastery compound contains two distinct churches serving different liturgical functions. The lower church is the older structure, dating to the fifteenth century with original interior frescoes still partially visible despite considerable age. The upper church underwent reconstruction following a destructive fire event in 1995, with new interior frescoes completed during the early 2000s. The monastery remains an active religious community with monks in permanent residence within the compound. Daily liturgical services occur year-round according to Orthodox Christian liturgical calendars and schedules. Visitors are welcomed to enter the monastery grounds and churches during opening hours. Modest dress requirements are enforced; visitors must wear long trousers or skirts extending below the knee, and clothing covering the shoulders is required. These requirements reflect Orthodox monastic conventions regarding appropriate dress within religious spaces. The monastery courtyard contains a garden area with established vegetation and mature trees. Views from the courtyard extend across the roofscapes of Budva towards Sveti Nikola island visible offshore. There is no admission charge for entry. Photography within the church interiors may be restricted.
